Avengers: Secret Wars, Micheal Waldron, Loki

Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron will soon be gearing up to tackle another Marvel epic. According to Deadline, Waldron is responsible for writing Marvel‘s Avengers: Secret Wars screenplay. Inspired by the Marvel Comics event of the same name, Secret Wars involves the destruction of universes in the Marvel Universe. As each universe crumbles, heroes and villains struggle to save their reality from complete and total annihilation. While Marvel has yet to reveal plot details about this epic project, it’s believed the story will share similarities with the original saga written by Jonathan Hickman.

With Waldron coming aboard Avengers: Secret Wars, another piece of Marvel’s puzzle has fallen into place. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) writing the script. Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer will also write Marvel’s Fantastic Four, which Matt Shakman (WandaVision) is directing.

Smoke on the street suggests Waldron’s name was at the top of Marvel’s list after the success of Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The second season of Loki is in production, with Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson reprising their roles. Avengers: Secret Wars is an undertaking for any filmmaker, even one who’s worked at Marvel before. The Avengers movies have an added prestige, as they traditionally mark the end of an era in Marvel’s cinematic timeline. If Secret Wars is anything like Marvel’s original event, the story will feature an overwhelming amount of Marvel characters sharing the screen. Avengers: Secret Wars also lives in the shadow of movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two of the biggest films of all time.

Do you think Waldron is up to the task? Will Avengers: Secret Wars match the heights of other Marvel epics? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
