Production on a sequel to the live-action adaptation of Tokyo Revengers has been greenlit, according to a recent announcement by Warner Bros.’ official Japanese YouTube channel.

The new video confirms that the film would be coming in 2023, and see the return of many of the original cast from the first film, including lead actor Takemichi Hanagaki. Once again, the film will be directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa and produced by Shota Okada. New cast members were also confirmed to be arriving in the film, although no information on that was revealed at the time.

The first Tokyo Revengers live-action film adaptation was originally supposed to open in October 2020 in Japan, but was delayed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film ended up opening in July 2021, and instantly shot to the top of the Japanese box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing live-action films of 2021 in the country.

“Hanagaki Takemichi lives an unsatisfying life right up until his death,” reads the official synopsis on the manga. “Waking up 12 years in the past, he reckons with the eventual fate of his friends and tries to prevent an unfortunate future. Takemichi Hanagaki is a freelancer that’s reached the absolute pits of despair in his life.”
