Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland

From The Simpsons to Family Guy to South Park, certain animated shows seem to keep going and going, but could Rick and Morty be one of them? Series co-creator Justin Roiland certainly thinks so.

From the very first episode, Rick and Morty established just how long the series could last (100 years!) and Justin Roiland told Total Film that he doesn’t see the series concluding anytime soon. “There’s obviously some kind of narrative threads that you want to push towards some kind of resolution,” Roiland said. “But I think this show, like a lot of other really awesome animated shows that I love, has the potential to just go and go and go.” Adult Swim has a lot of faith in the series, even giving it an unprecedented 70-episode renewal back in 2018. Roiland points to an “infinite” amount of sci-fi stories in the multiverse that could keep the series going for years to come. “I don’t see any sort of big, giant ending,” Roiland said. “Even if we did, you just have all the other multiverses… You could just pick up with another family with another Rick. It kind of could go on forever, really.

Featuring the voices of Justin Roiland, Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer, Rick and Morty follows “a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. Rick Sanchez is living with his daughter Beth’s family and constantly bringing her, his son-in-law Jerry, granddaughter Summer, and grandson Morty into intergalactic escapades.” The sixth season of Rick and Morty is set to return next week, but we shouldn’t have that long to wait for more as the writers actually wrapped the seventh season last summer and are currently working on the eighth season of the series.

Even if Rick and Morty continues for years to come, they have an awful lot of catching up to do if they want to reach the numbers of the other long-running animated series. The Simpsons have over 730 episodes under their belt, with Family Guy about to reach the 400-episode mark and South Park coming up with nearly 320 episodes. After six seasons, Rick and Morty have produced 61 episodes.

Should Rick and Morty go on forever, or should there be an endgame in place?
