Jon Hamm Confirms He Almost Played ‘X-Men’ Villain Mr. Sinister

Jon Hamm has confirmed that he was supposed to play a supervillain in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise — Mister Sinister. A Victorian-era geneticist, Mister Sinister gains immortality and seeks out mutant DNA for his own devious purposes. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Hamm opened up about how his character would have fit into the movie series.

As it turns out, Hamm was set to have an onscreen cameo in the post-credits scene of Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. However, the film’s never-ending production troubles and delays prevented the cameo from happening. From multiple release delays to extensive reshoots, The New Mutants’ rocky journey to the big screen was the main factor behind Hamm’s role being cut.

Hamm now says that there’s no footage of him in costume that could potentially be repurposed in a future Marvel movie. “I never shot anything,” he revealed. “I remember having a conversation with people: I’m a huge comic book fan, especially of the X-Men and The New Mutants, so I was excited to be considered. But these conversations happen and then life intervenes.“

Hamm also addressed fans’ long-standing wish for him to play Superman. Even though the former Mad Men star worked with Zack Snyder on 2011’s Sucker Punch — two years before Man of Steel — a conversation about Clark Kent never happened. “I never spoke to him about superhero stuff. I think I might be long in the tooth for the Superman tights these days,” said Hamm. “But I love Zack: He’s a super-talented guy and a lovely man.”
