The highly anticipated third season of Netflix’s The Witcher is almost here, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and actor Joey Batey detailed what to expect from Jaskier in the new season.

In an interview with Netflix ahead of the Season 3 premiere, Schmidt Hissrich said that Jaskier would be “flourishing” this season, and that the character falls in love with someone fans know and shows up often in the books.

“Jaskier falls in love,” Schmidt Hissrich said. “And it’s with a character who fans will know [and] continues showing up in the books. So what happens this season between them will have ripple effects for a very long time.”

Batey also commented on his character coming into Season 3, noting that Jaskier will be having a “hot girl summer” of sorts.

“He’s having his hot girl summer,” said Batey. “It’s been really rewarding to see [his love life] told in a very visual way. [We] ensured that these romances are told truthfully — and sensitively and carefully, without resorting to stereotypes… Hopefully we’ve created something that is special, a sapioromantic and sapiosexual [connection] that is as flawed as any other relationship in this show.”

Of course, Jaskier still will have responsibilities, something Batey said the character isn’t necessarily built for but will have to learn to do.

“He’s certainly a man of many trades, but I’m not sure he’s inherently built to be a spy,” Batey said. “Yet he’s found himself in a time of war, in turmoil, and is trying to do his best to do something good.”

What do we know about The Witcher Season 3?

The Witcher Season 3 Volume 1, which will contain episodes one to five, is set to release on the platform on June 29. After that, Volume 2, which is made up of episodes six to eight, will debut on July 27.

“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” reads Season 3’s synopsis. “Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”

The upcoming third season of The Witcher will be Henry Cavill’s last, as the actor is set to move on from the series, with Liam Hemsworth replacing him in the role of Geralt of Rivia. That being said, Cavill will apparently be receiving a “heroic send-off” in the third season.

Based on the stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is created and executive produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who also serves as the showrunner. Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Sean Daniel Company are executive producing, along with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko of Platige Image.
