Get your paintball gun loaded because a Community movie has been officially announced. And while it may not be out for some time, lead Joel McHale is assuring fans that Community will an emotional “family reunion” of sorts.
At this week’s Saturn Awards, which Joel McHale hosted, he remarked that the Community movie table read alone was an emotional experience for him, who expects fans may have a similar reaction. “I’m not kidding, so you know that I’m sarcastic about literally fucking everything but um, there will be tears…We did that table read during the pandemic and I cried like a baby afterwards and I’m not joking.”
Joel McHale is also excited to reunite with his Glendale Community College classmates. “We announced it. Peacock is paying for it, thank you Peacock…So yeah, it’s happening and everybody’s back.” Well, sort of. McHale added, “It really is like a family reunion but without a-holes.”
One could perceive this as a jab at Chevy Chase, who was reportedly, well, Chevy Chase while shooting Community. Chase played Pierce Hawthorne, who was killed off in season five. Responding years later to alleged behavior, Chase said, “I don’t give a crap! I am who I am. I don’t care.” Oh, Chevy!
During its six season run, Community nabbed four Primetime Emmy nominations and one win, for, interestingly enough, the animation on the classic holiday episode “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas.” It is also often cited as one of the best cult TV shows ever.
No release date has been set for the Community movie, but fans may want to hold tight, as series showrunner Dan Harmon has warned that it could be some time before it hits Peacock.
