James Gunn comments on the cancellation of Titans and Doom Patrol after fans blame him for making the choice to end both series.

James Gunn, Titans

It was announced yesterday that HBO Max had cancelled Titans and Doom Patrol after four seasons, which prompted some fans to place the blame on James Gunn and Peter Safran. As the pair became co-chairmen and CEO’s of DC Studios late last year, you would think that they did have a hand in ending Titans and Doom Patrol, but James Gunn took to Twitter to say that the decision to end both shows actually preceded their appointments.

The decision to end the series precedes us,” James Gunn wrote on Twitter. “But I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows.” Rumours regarding the cancellation of Titans and Doom Patrol first emerged last summer, long before Gunn and Safran signed on to run DC Studios. On the bright side, producers of both shows were able to write proper endings that will hopefully provide a satisfying conclusion for the characters.

While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement to THR. “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.

Both Titans and Doom Patrol are in the midst of their fourth seasons, so fans still have a handful of episodes left before they wrap up for good. Titans revolves around a group of young heroes who join forces in their fight against evil. The series stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Kory Anders, Teagan Croft as Rachel Roth, Ryan Potter as Gar Logan, and more. As for Doom Patrol, the series centers on a group of outcast superheroes who are led by a modern-day mad scientist. The series stars Diane Guerrero as Jane, April Bowlby as Rita Farr, Joivan Wade as Victor Stone, Matt Bomer/Matthew Zuk as Larry Trainor, Alan Tudyk as Mr. Nobody, Brendan Fraser/Riley Shanahan as Cliff Steele, and more.
