James Gunn poses the ultimate Superman question to fans on Twitter — should Superman wear trunks or no trunks?

James Gunn, Superman, Trunks

If you didn’t expect to be staring at Superman’s crotch today, well, you can thank James Gunn for that. Superman’s costume is one of the most iconic superhero outfits of all time. While there have been many variations over the decades, most kept the red, blue, and yellow colour scheme and the trunks worn over the costume. However, the New 52 take on Superman ditched the trunks, which caused a bit of controversy, and Henry Cavill went trunk-less in Man of Steel. With a new Superman movie on the way, James Gunn posed the ultimate question to fans on Twitter — trunks or no trunks?

In a follow-up tweet, James Gunn noted that the poll is purely for fun and they’re “not going to decide whether Superman has trunks or no trunks based on an egregiously non-scientific Twitter poll.” Personally, I would say I’m a fan of the trunks. Superman’s outfit is an iconic design that has stayed relevant for a reason, but I’m also not about to grab my torch and pitchfork if the new Superman doesn’t have trunks.

Superman: Legacy will be written by James Gunn and is regarded as the launch of the new DC Universe. DC Studios co-chairperson and CEO Peter Safran said that it won’t be an origin story, but will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.” Gunn added, “With our stories, we want to take it away from good guy vs. bad guy. There are really good—almost saintly—people and Superman is among them. There are really terrible villains like Gorilla Grodd or the Joker. And then there’s everybody in between them, so there are all these shades of gray which allow us to tell complex stories.” There’s no director attached yet, but it’s possible Gunn could helm the movie in addition to writing it. Superman: Legacy is set for a July 11, 2025 release.
