In a new interview, The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco sounds confident that The Purge 6 is going to happen
Almost two years have gone by since Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco let it be known that he had an idea for The Purge 6 that would get him back into the director’s chair (after handing The First Purge and The Forever Purge over to other directors) and see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes, the character he played in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. But as time goes by, it was seeming less likely that this sixth Purge movie was going to happen. Earlier this year, Grillo indicated the shot-callers at Universal and Blumhouse weren’t sure they were going to move forward with this one. But in a new interview with Variety, DeMonaco seems confident that The Purge 6 is going to happen.
Today, June 7th, actually marks the tenth anniversary of the release of The Purge, which is why Variety got in contact with DeMonaco. The writer/director talked about the fact that The Purge got forty to fifty rejections before it found a home, and that he drew inspiration from the likes of Escape from New York and The Warriors when crafting the sequels. And as the article wraps up, he confirms that he finished writing the script for The Purge 6 eight months ago. Then he tells Variety how the new sequel will further elevate the world of the Purge franchise:
“It’s not completely different than previous movies, but it’s a new America that we’re entering into. In The Forever Purge, America kind of collapsed, and it’s really kind of mapped itself according to different ideologies. The states are based on sexuality, religion and ideology. So we’ve broken apart and the state of discord is at its worst. We enter The Purge in that world.“
He sounds pretty sure there that The Purge 6 is going to be made, and doesn’t express any doubt about it in the article. So now we just sit back and wait to see when and if The Purge 6 is going to happen.
