Jake Gyllenhaal will officially headline a reboot of 1989’s Road House, being described more as a reimagined take on the classic that starred Patrick Swayze. The project has moved forward in a big way with the news, coming to us via Variety, that the project has landed at Amazon’s Prime Video.
Doug Liman is set to helm the new film from a script written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Joel Silver is also back on board to produce the project for his company Silver Pictures after producing the 1989 film for MGM. JJ Hook, Alison Winter, and Aaron Auch are also attached to the project as executive producers. Prime Video released a statement today that announced the impending start of the production:
“’Road House’ is a homerun for us. Not only is it a nod to fans of the original, but it is also a big, fun, broad audience movie. We are thrilled to collaborate with Joel, Doug, and this great cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and for them to come together to reimagine the classic MGM film as an action-packed adventure for our global audience.”
News of Jake Gyllenhaal showing interest in the Road House reboot broke in November of last year. According to Prime Video, the new take will star Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys. He “soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.” In addition to Gyllenhaal, the film also stars Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery. The movie is expected to shoot in the Dominican Republic this month.
The original Road House is the very definition of a cult classic. Starring Patrick Swayze as James Dalton, the film follows a zen bouncer hired to clean up a rowdy Missouri Bar. Soon, he finds himself running up against a corrupt businessman who controls the small town. Against a reported $15 million budget, the film grossed a relatively modest $30 million but found a brand new life on home video and beyond.
