A Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot update has been shared by actor Josh Gad. Shrink your hopes now — it looks like the project may be a failed experiment.
What is the status of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot?
In a recent tweet, Gad said people have asked about the project. He revealed they were set to begin right before the COVID-19 pandemic began. When they were ready to start again, his schedule got too hectic. Then — finally — the budget for the project increased too much.
“A lot of [you] ask me what’s going on with this film,” Gad said. “Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us.”
Gad said that if fans still wanted it, they should let Disney know by reaching out.
The Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot — set to be titled Shrunk — would have acted as a continuation of the original franchise. Gad co-starred as the adult version of Nick Szalinski, the son of Rick Moranis’ Wayne Szalinski from the original franchise. Joe Johnston — who directed the original film — was planning to return to direct the new film, which would have taken place several years after the first.
The Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise began with the original 1989 film. Two sequels were also released, with the third entry (Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves) being released as a straight-to-DVD film.
