One hears that they are making a movie out of Barbie and on the surface it does not instill a lot of confidence or excitement, especially after the track record of other movies based on toys like Transformers or G.I. Joe or Ouija. But this Barbie movie could be something different. It was co-written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, two legitimately great directors, and Gerwig herself is directing the film. That’s right; from the director of Lady Bird and Little Women comes… Barbie! Who’da thunk it?

Those talented filmmakers have recruited an equally talented cast too. The film will star Margot Robbie in the title role, with Ryan Gosling as Ken. And now, per The Hollywood ReporterBarbie has added Will Ferrel to the cast as well. As for who he will portray in the film, THR writes “that there is a meta aspect to the proceedings. Ferrell is said to be playing the CEO of a toy company that may or not be Mattel.”

Ferrell has been in a toy-based movie before; he was the voice of the evil Lord Business in The LEGO Movie franchise. It would be kind of amazing if he was playing an evil lord of business in Barbie too. I guess he’s a proven commodity in that type of role.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie — it’s gonna take a while for that phrase to not sound weird — will open in theaters in 2023. The rest of the impressive cast includes Simu Liu, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, America Ferrera, and Kate McKinnon. If nothing else, this has to be one of the best cast in a toy-based movie ever.
