In a recent interview with Game Informer, Gotham Knights Executive Producer Fleur Marty and Game Director Geoff Ellenor chatted about how they’re bringing a unique vision of Gotham to a post-Arkham landscape. Not only will this new game from WB Games Montréal focus on co-op action between a pair of Bruce Wayne’s wards, but it will also have them exploring the biggest representation of Gotham City in gaming history.

Like many open-world games before it, Gotham Knights bets big on the size of its playable environment. Robin, Nightwing, and the rest will roam across the open city in customizable Batcycles before launching into fights. Marty said that they focused on “density and verticality” for the city, making sure that the explorable space has a lot of layers to uncover as players explore. WB showed off some of this world in its most recent gameplay demo.

One surprise some might not see coming is that a co-op session could involve multiples of the same Bat-Family hero. Ellenor confirmed that rosters during co-op could get “as weird as you want,” letting two of any character roam together to take on Gotham’s seedy underbelly. Marty also said that at least one point in the game reacts to teams with multiples of the same character. It’s a comic book universe, so a pseudoscientific explanation involving some sort of multiverse or crossover would be quite fitting.

Gotham Knights is one of the few big games still holding onto a 2022 release date, and it’s also one of the games firmly launching into the next generation by foregoing versions on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Players can get ready to team with a friend to see who’s the better Red Hood when the game launches on October 25 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
