According to Gunn, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will serve as the epilogue of Phase 4, taking place between Thor: Love and Thunder and next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director also revealed that he had no idea that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was part of Phase 5 until the recent presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, putting him on the same page as the fans.

The space-traveling team was last seen in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder, where they teamed up with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor for some intergalactic adventures in the film’s first act. Though Groot will be the focus of this month’s Disney+ series of shorts titled I Am Groot, the team itself will next be seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special towards the end of the year, then in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023.
