With today’s Free Movie of the Day, we’re diving back into the world of crime dramas with Midnight Runner, a 2017 film from directors John Mathis and Jared Sprouse. Scripted by Mathis and Sprouse, Midnight Runner has the following synopsis: Teenager Ian attempts to make a new start and escape his history of violence. However, he becomes hunted by a high school gang that happens to be supported and led by a corrupt cop.
The film stars Ben Weinswig, Mekhai Lee, Julia Crytser, Noah Crandell, Tavis L. Baker, Dylan Bougis, Tris Orin, Art Parsells, Connor Mull, Colby Joyner, Boris “Bluz” Rogers, Dawn Giovanni, Dawn O’Donoghue, Jahseyne Eccleston, and Rachel Shoemaker.
Partially funded through an IndieGogo campaign, Midnight Runner was the second feature film from Mathis and Sprouse, following their 2015 drama When We Were Young. Mathis has since gone solo to write and direct the 2021 horror movie Where’s Rose.
Here’s the description of Midnight Runner that was on IndieGogo: Midnight Runner is a neo-noir gang film about a group of high schoolers. Ian, 17, a young man with a dark past moves into a new town after he gets out of juvie. He starts to get to know and befriend members of the local high school gang. However, after a series of events Ian has a massive falling out and ends beats the gang leader, Kurdt, to a pulp in front of the whole school. Now Kurdt and the rest of his gang become hellbent on killing Ian. This is a story of Ian running away and trying to break free of his violent past while being chased by his violent enemies. This film examines the idea that “Violence begets violence.”
