Eragon TV series in the works for Disney+

According to Variety, Disney+ is developing a live-action Eragon TV series based on the novels by Christopher Paolini. The outlet says that Paolini would serve as co-writer and co-showrunner on the Eragon TV series and that the search is on for someone to work alongside him as he’s never written for television before.

Christopher Paolini wrote Eragon when he was just a teenager, but the fantasy novel later exploded in popularity and became a best-seller. Naturally, Hollywood came calling, and 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to the novel, but unfortunately, the resulting adaptation was met with scathing reviews. Although Paolini wrote several more installments of what became known as The Inheritance Cycle, the failure of the first film spelled doom for any potential sequels. Once Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, Paolini called upon fans last year to push Disney to develop a proper adaptation of the novels.

The Inheritance Cycle tells the story of a young farm boy named Eragon who discovers an egg that hatches into a dragon he names Saphira. Through their bond and the help of his mentor Brom, Eragon learns to be a Dragon Rider, an ancient order that had long been thought to be wiped out by the evil king Galbatorix. Eragon and Saphira set out to overthrow Galbatorix and free the land of Alagaësia from his tyranny. Eragon won’t be the only failed big-screen fantasy series to get a TV adaptation from Disney. A series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson franchise starring Walker Scobell is also in the works for Disney+. Two films, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, were released by Fox a decade ago and received mixed reviews.
