Don Cheadle is gearing up for his return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming continuation of Rhodey’s saga with Armor Wars. The actor is often relegated to a supporting role in the franchise, although Cheadle would also previously be buddy-buddy with an A-list cast in the Ocean’s franchise as the explosives expert, Basher. Variety reports that Cheadle recently spoke about how often fans would say to his face that they hated Ocean’s Twelve, the middle of the trilogy.
Cheadle would already garner criticism in the films with his over-the-top British accent, and now, the actor talks candidly in an interview with GQ magazine that people are uninhibitedly vocal to him about their hatred to that movie as a whole.
I love it that the second movie is the one that people will just unabashedly walk up to me and go, ‘Yeah, I hated that one. That one sucked.’ It’s like, cool, ‘You just said that to my face like I’m not a person, but alright. Thank you.”
Ocean’s Twelve is often criticized for being a less focused entry that plays like a movie that is mainly having the cast mess around while on vacation in exotic European locales. However, sometimes it comes through how much fun they do have as Cheadle explains the atmosphere, “When we came back to do the second film, we hadn’t seen each other for a long time. We hadn’t all been together. We were just reuniting, so we were just milling around for an hour and then we realized, ‘Oh wait, we’re actually here to shoot something.’”
The consensus is that audiences felt like the series got back on track with Ocean’s Thirteen, then the series spun off with Sandra Bullock playing Danny Ocean’s sister in Ocean’s 8. However, Cheadle reveals that talks of another sequel with the original cast had been floating around. “We were talking about it [after ‘Ocean’s 13’], and then Bernie [Mac] passed, and very quickly we were like, ‘No, we don’t want to do it. But I just did a movie with [Soderbergh], and he said, ‘I think there may be a way to do it again. I’m thinking about it.’ And it didn’t go much further than that. But I don’t know; I don’t know who all would be in it. I imagine the main group of us would be in. It would be interesting to see.”
