Deadpool 3

After two Deadpool movies developed under 20th Century Fox, Disney’s acquisition of the studio several years ago means that the next film in the franchise will bring the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given Deadpool’s ability to break the fourth wall, the character is uniquely positioned to comment on his new situation. While speaking with Post Cred Pod, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick teased a few plot details regarding the story of Deadpool 3.

I think it presents a wonderful opportunity for fish-out-of-water. Deadpool is a lunatic at the center of a movie. Usually, the lunatics are the supporting characters and the protagonists are reasonably sane. Our movie’s flipped. To drop a lunatic into a very sane world, it’s straight butter. It’s going to be really fun.

The description of a “fish-out-of-water” story for Deadpool 3 implies that there’s a lot of fun to be had with the character’s awareness of his new universe. While speaking with our own Alex Maidy recently, Rhett Reese teased that “The MCU is an amazing sandbox to play in. We’ll throw lots of cliches as well because we’re giving it 110% man or taking it one day at a time. It’s the Bull Durham thing. Like we’re taking it one day at a time. We can’t divulge details but suffice it to say that when Ryan and Paul and I are on Zoom together, we are cackling. So, it’s pretty fun.

There had been fears that Deadpool wouldn’t be allowed to remain an R-rated affair under Disney’s supervision, but everyone involved has said that won’t be the case. “They’re not gonna mess with the tone,” said Reese earlier this month. “I mean, I’d never say never, I guess there’s an outside chance, but we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated] and we’re proceeding as if it’s R. We would like it to be R, we always have, so I don’t think that’ll change.” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed as much last year. Here’s hoping it sticks. Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
