DC League of Super-Pets opening softer than expected

[ad_1]

BOX OFFICE UPDATE: It looks like DC League of Super-Pets is flying lower than expected, with a revised three-day opening forecast of $23 million. This is pretty disappointing for a DC-related property, even if it is a children’s movie, with a voice cast that includes Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. I’m sure Johnson will have a lot more luck in the DC Universe with Black Adam, and let’s be honest – this always seemed like a bit of a toss-off, didn’t it? The problem with movies like this and Disney’s similarly underwhelming Lightyear is that audiences have gotten used to seeing films like this via their streaming services. Indeed, a quick turnover to HBO Max seems likely for this animated flick.

It’s still forecasted to come in at number one, with Deadline reporting that Jordan Peele’s Nope will likely come in 2nd with $19 million (just a million more than we predicted), after a not bad second-week stumble of 57%. The only other semi-wide opening this weekend is B.J. Novak’s Vengeance (which we liked), with it likely DOA at the box office with a $1.6 million start. It’s scheduled to hit PVOD in just 17 days, where it may find its audience.

In happier news, WB’s Elvis continues to find an audience, with the film having grossed a hefty $129 million so far. If you notice, the film has yet to hit HBO Max, as word of mouth has been strong enough that WB seems keen on letting it continue its solid run at the box office. Blumhouse’s The Black Phone (which we loved) has also held up better than expected, earning $83 million domestically. Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick continues to kick ass at the box office, with it still rounding out the top 5 for an estimated $650 million + total.

Stay tuned for more box office updates as the weekend goes on. Are you planning on seeing anything this weekend? Let us know in the comments!
