HBO announced on Thursday that the hit David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream will be releasing on HBO and HBO Max on April 29, 2023.

The film, which is directed by Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Brett Morgen (Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck), collects previously unreleased footage from the legendary artist’s personal archives, as well as live concert footage, to tell the story of the life of David Bowie.

Moonage Daydream was originally released in 2022 and was praised by critics and audiences alike.

Described as an immersive cinematic experience, Moonage Daydream is coined from Bowie’s 1971 song of the same name. Morgen spent four years developing the project and nearly two years designing the soundscape, animations, and color pallet.

“Through the sublime, kaleidoscopic imagery, personal archived footage, unseen performances, and anchored by David Bowie’s own music and words,” reads the synopsis. “The film invites the audiences to immerse themselves in the unique world that is Bowie. Throughout his career, across generations, Bowie taught us that our differences were our strengths. With Moonage Daydream, Bowie provides us with a road map of how to survive the 21st century, inviting audiences to celebrate his legacy and enduring influence like never before.”

The docufilm features captivating never-before-seen footage and performances spanning David Bowie’s illustrious 54 year-career. The film includes 40 exclusively remastered Bowie songs.  This marks the first project to be supported by the David Bowie Estate, who granted Morgan unprecedented access to their collection.

Moonage Daydream is produced by Bowie’s long-time collaborator, music producer Tony Visconti. Joining him are Tracy Flannigan, Jennie Amias, Lauren Ospala, James Smith, and Helen Butcher.
