It has been nearly four years since the theatrical release of Crazy Rich Asians, and now we finally have an update regarding the long-in-development project. According to Deadline, Chinese-Australian writer Amy Wang has officially been tapped to become the new scribe for Warner Bros. Pictures’ long-awaited Crazy Rich Asians sequel.
The up-and-coming writer will be replacing the first film’s scribes Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, who both got involved in a pay disparity controversy with the studio in 2019, where they reportedly offered Chiarelli between $800,000 and $1 million for the sequel, while Lim was only offered around $110,000

The second film will be based on the second book in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians novel trilogy called China Rich Girlfriend. The sequel will once again be directed by Jon M. Chu (In the Heights, Wicked).
It is expected to feature the return of leading stars Henry Golding (Snake Eyes) and Golden Globe nominee Constance Wu (Hustlers). It’s still unclear if most of the first film’s cast will also reprise their roles including Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi), Awkwafina (The Farewell, Shang-Chi), and Gemma Chan (Eternals).
The first film centered around Wu’s Rachel Chu, whose seemingly normal “meet the parents trip” turns into chaos when finds out that her boyfriend is part of an extremely wealthy and famous clan in Singapore. In addition to its critical success, it also earned a worldwide gross of over $230 million, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy film of the 2010s.

This marks Wang’s first major high-profile project after working as a story editor on Netflix’s Brothers Son. In 2018, her short film Unnatural earned her a Cannes Lion Award.
