In a new memoir, actor Colton Haynes has revealed why he infamously left the MTV series Teen Wolf in 2012, as well as why he left The CW series Arrow.

Shortly after Haynes’ departure from Teen Wolf in 2012, reports began to surface that it was due to a contract negotiation issue. However, his new memoir Miss Memory Lane dives deeper into the issue, with Haynes alleging that he was not being paid as much as the rest of the cast was despite also having a main role in the series.

“The real truth was that they didn’t want to pay me the same amount as everyone else,” Colton wrote (via E!). “Which wasn’t a lot to begin with by Hollywood standards, even though my working quote—the fee I would be paid to appear on anyone else’s show—was higher than most of the cast’s.”

Haynes also revealed that the team of people representing him at the time were also responsible for how bad things got, noting that he believes that he wasn’t offered a more standard salary because of how much they didn’t like his team.

“It didn’t help that I was represented by a team of people who made the Teen Wolf production’s life a living hell,” said Haynes. “So in order to get back at my team, the production refused to pay me the standard salary.”

Later in his career, Haynes starred in The CW’s Arrow, playing Roy Harper/Arsenal for eight seasons. However, Haynes left the series as a main star prior to its eighth season. While it was rumored that his role was trimmed due to Haynes’ contract with The CW coming to an end, Haynes reveals in his memoir that he was actually battling depression, and “couldn’t stand” working with one of his castmates, without naming them.

“I had walked away from my full-time job on Arrow at the beginning of the year, supposedly because my contract had ended,” Haynes said. “But it was really because I was too depressed and I couldn’t stand working with one of my cast mates.”

Despite the tough times on both shows for Haynes, things do have a happier ending for him, as he’s now set to appear in the upcoming Teen Wolf: The Movie that is set to premiere on Paramount+, where he’ll rejoin the likes of Tyler Posey, Holland Roden, Dylan Sprayberry, and Tyler Hoechlin as they reprise their roles from the original, hit series.
