The Batman sequel, Colin Farrell, Penguin

There was plenty to love in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but Colin Farrell’s take on the Penguin was a definite highlight for me. Although we didn’t see Penguin quite as much as I would have liked, Colin Farrell will be reprising the role for an upcoming HBO Max series. However, Colin Farrell told Entertainment Tonight that he hopes he’ll be returning for The Batman sequel as well.

Oh my god, you kidding me?! It’s so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I’ve been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean… it was a joy.

The Batman sequel was officially announced at CinemaCon earlier this year. “Thank you all for your tremendous support for The Batman,” Matt Reeves said. “We couldn’t have gotten here without the faith and enthusiasm of all your teams around the world. I’m excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter.” Colin Farrell told ET that Reeves is currently hard at work writing The Batman sequel as well as making sure the Penguin series gets off on the right foot. “Matt’s up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he’s just so meticulous,” Farrell said. “He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over [HBO Max’s] Penguin [series] as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.” The actor added that he hopes to start shooting the Penguin series in 2023.

The Penguin series will pick up Oswald’s story where The Batman left off, and Colin Farrell seems quite excited to step back into the villain’s shoes once more. “The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Farrell said when the series was officially announced. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.

Would you like to see Colin Farrell return as Penguin for The Batman sequel?
