Cobra Kai, spinoffs

Perhaps it’s the show’s YouTube origins, but I continue to be surprised by just popular Cobra Kai has become. The fifth season of the Karate Kid spinoff series recently debuted on Netflix, and although a sixth season hasn’t been officially announced, it’s expected that the series will return for more. But even when Cobra Kai does come to an end, its creators say that they already have ideas for potential spinoffs.

While speaking with GamesRadar, Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg said that expanding the franchise is definitely on their mind. “That’s what we love most about the franchise: anybody watching our show sees how many characters are entering in and there’s part of us that never wants to stop,” Schlossberg said. “We do have a place where it’s all going, but that doesn’t mean the world has to stop there. We have lots of ideas of continuing [the universe] and keeping the Karate Kid vibes going through other stories and other shows and different formats for that.” However, you shouldn’t expect to see Cobra Kai spinoffs anytime soon, as Schlossberg added that they’re purely focused on the main series right now

Although it remains to be seen whether we’ll ever see any Cobra Kai spinoffs, the folks behind the series are developing a spinoff of another beloved ’80s movie. It was reported last month that Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald were developing a spinoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for Paramount Pictures. The Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff is titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off and will follow the “same-day adventures of the titular valets who took the Ferrari on a joy ride” in the 1986 John Hughes movie. The original roles were played by Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins, but the characters weren’t given names at the time. Bill Posley (Bitch Ass) is slated to pen the script for the spinoff.

Our own Alex Maidy recently reviewed the new season of Cobra Kai. “Overall, Cobra Kai‘s fifth season is still a welcome and fun season of a surprisingly good show that falls a little short due to the inconsistent first and second half of the season,” Maidy wrote. “But, like Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang, sometimes different styles can come together to create something special.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here. Would you like to see any Cobra Kai spinoffs?
