Universal just dropped a bomb on everyone expecting a quiet Sunday night, with them finally unveiling the new, full-length trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Now, if you were one of the many folks to see Avatar: The Way of Water this weekend, you’ve already seen this, and indeed, the IMAX-shot movie promises to be a visual spectacle. The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the enigmatic scientist who’s considered the father of the A-bomb.

The Oppenheimer story was previously made into a (pretty decent) movie in the eighties called Fat Man and Little Boy (named after the two A-bombs dropped on Japan), but Nolan’s epic seems to be a whole other ballgame. The trailer is spectacular and focuses mainly on what could be a career-defining performance from the always-great Murphy. Emily Blunt co-stars as his wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, a scientist in her own right, while Florence Pugh plays his mistress, psychiatrist Jean Tatlock. Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Kenneth Branagh, and more co-star.

As per Universal’s official release,

“The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.

Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.”

Indeed, the movie looks to be an absolute marvel. If you know anything about Oppenheimer’s story, it will no doubt be packed with drama, with no real happy ending in store for the father of the A-bomb, who, as the trailer shows, considered the use of the A-bomb something of a paradox, as in order to arguably save the world, they had to bring it to the brink of annihilation.

Oppenheimer comes out in theaters on July 21st, 2023, and indeed this trailer should rocket it right to the top of everyone’s must-see list.
