Catherine Keener, Joker 2

I never thought that Joker would turn out to be such a massive success (let alone gross over a billion dollars), but I also didn’t think that Joaquin Phoenix would ever return for a sequel. I should probably get used to being wrong by now. Joker: Folie à Deux will once again find Phoenix returning to the role of Arthur Fleck, and Deadline reported today that Catherine Keener (The Adam Project) will be joining him.

It’s not known who Catherine Keener will be playing in the Joker sequel, with Deadline only describing it as a “major role” that’s being kept a secret. Whether this means that Keener will be playing a character who might be familiar to comic-book fans remains to be seen, but she’s a great addition to the ensemble cast. In addition to Joaquin Phoenix and Catherine Keener, Joker: Folie à Deux will also star Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, and Zazie Beetz. It’s not known who Gleeson will play, but Gaga is expected to play Harley Quinn, and Beetz will be reprising her role of Fleck’s neighbour and love interest Sophie Dumond from the original movie.

Todd Phillips will return to direct Joker: Folie à Deux from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver and production is expected to kick off this December. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s been said that much of it will take place within Arkham Asylum, which is where we left Arthur in the last film. It’s also believed that the film will have musical elements, which I’m quite excited to see play out. Catherine Keener was most recently seen starring alongside Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, and Zoe Saldaña in The Adam Project on Netflix.

Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
