The Whale is an outstanding film. The latest from Darren Aronofsky is based on a powerful play by writer, Samuel D. Hunter, and it is a profound and moving work. The feature also gives us a brilliant and unforgettable performance from Brendan Fraser (who we love) as a recluse hiding away from the world due to his weight. Not only does it feature his impressive work, the film also stars Sadie Sink, Ty Simpkins, and Hong Chau, exploring characters all struggling to get by in their own personal ways. It’s a force of a film, one that leaves an indelible impression on the viewer. And yes, all the Academy Award talk about Fraser’s performance is on point. He is absolutely stunning.
Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to speak with Fraser, Sink, Hunter, and Chau. First up, I sat down with Sadie and Hong. Firstly, I had to give Sadie some love for being the one character in to put Kate Bush back in the limelight on Stranger Things, we then quickly moved onto this amazing film. The two spoke about the depth of the characters they take on in The Whale. After I told Hong Chau that I felt her character was the most kind in the film, she brought up certain elements that I hadn’t really thought about. It was a terrific conversation.
After speaking to those two and waiting in line to talk to the man of the hour, Mr. Fraser passed by the waiting journalists and greeted each one of us with a sweet and tender hello. It was a brief interaction, but sort of a preview of what’s to come. As I walked into the room for my interview, I was instantly taken in by Brendan’s wonderful energy. And yes, it was terrific talking to both Mr. Fraser and this talented playwright/screenwriter, Sam Hunter. They opened up about where the story came from, and for Sam, this personal story was his life. As for Brendan, the way he spoke about taking this on nearly brought me to tears.
What a powerful film, and an incredible collection of talented artists. Look forward to more with our upcoming one on one interview with Darren Aronofsky very soon. See The Whale. It’s a superb work and it’s lingered with me for weeks after viewing (read our review).
