After impressing audiences with his role in The Many Saints of Newark, Michael Gandolfini is set to join the cast of Daredevil: Born Again.
The upcoming Marvel series will feature Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their roles of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, respectively. Details about what role Michael Gandolfini will play in Daredevil: Born Again are being kept under wraps, but Deadline hears that he may play Liam, an “ambitious guy from Staten Island.” The role is said to be a “major” one. The Many Saints of Newark was a prequel movie to HBO’s The Sopranos which followed a violent gang war from the perspectives of Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) and his teenage nephew, Tony Soprano. Michael Gandolfini played the young Tony Soprano, stepping into the role played so brilliantly by his late father, James Gandolfini.
Daredevil: Born Again is written and executive produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord and will consist of eighteen episodes. After several years of rumours following the cancellation of Netflix’s Daredevil series, Charlie Cox made the leap to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: No Way Home. He also suited up for She-Hulk and is expected to make an appearance in the upcoming Echo series as well. As for Vincent D’Onofrio, he returned for Hawkeye and will also appear in Echo.
Charlie Cox has said that he was “really emotional” reprising Daredevil for She-Hulk, but had a blast working with Tatiana Maslany. “I had a really fun time with Tatiana, and the chemistry between those two characters, the back and forth, was so much fun,” Cox said. “We got to see a new side of Matt Murdock, a side of him where he’s kind of enjoying his role and having fun and flirting.” Maslany has also expressed an interest in making an appearance on Daredevil: Born Again, which would certainly make sense given where She-Hulk left the two characters. Daredevil: Born Again will debut on Disney+ in 2024.
