Black Adam post-mortem reveals Ezra Miller’s Flash could continue in the new DC Universe

A new bombshell report from Variety that examines how Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson might have made an ultimately unsuccessful bid to have a significant role in the DCEU unearthed a few surprising details. One of the most shocking is that Ezra Miller’s The Flash might still have a future in the James Gunn and Peter Safran-run DC once the troubled actor’s film comes out this summer. Many assumed the studios would cut ties with the notoriously erratic star. Still, the Variety report notes that Miller has been behaving well since beginning mental health treatment in the summer.

According to various rumors, The Flash is one of the best-testing films in DC history, so the studio could be doubling down on what could be a valuable new franchise. The report also contends that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Zachary Levi’s Shazam might both have a future at DC, although one has to imagine that all hinges on how well their upcoming films do. Shazam: Fury of the Gods comes out on March 17th, while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes out on December 25th, 2023.

Of course, were any of the films to underperform, one imagines the new DC bosses will do a reset. Indeed, the report suggests that Black Adam ultimately underperformed at the box office relative to its budget. For his part, Henry Cavill’s Superman seems to be collateral damage, with the report noting that the decision had been made to move forward without Cavill way back in 2018 before being brought back into the fold by Johnson, whose ex-wife, Dany Garcia, is Cavill’s former manager and current advisor.

In the end, the power shift behind the scenes at DC has had significant consequences for a lot of films in development, with the infamous shelving of Batgirl being the most extreme. It’ll be interesting to see how the success or failure of the four DC movies set to hit theaters this year (including Blue Beetle) affect Gunn and Safran’s plans going forward.

Do you think it’s fair that Miller gets to stay with DC while Cavill gets dumped? Let us know in the comments.
