Andy Serkis was gutted when Snoke died in The Last Jedi

Andy Serkis admits that he was gutted upon learning that Supreme Leader Snoke would die in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

When Supreme Leader Snoke was first introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the character was such a mystery that he sparked two years’ worth of theories. Played by Andy Serkis, Snoke was only seen via hologram in The Force Awakens, but he made a grand appearance in the flesh in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In one of the more surprising scenes in The Last Jedi, Snoke was killed, bisected by a lightsaber. Snoke’s death wasn’t only a surprise for the audience, but for Andy Serkis himself. While speaking with GQ, Serkis admitted that the revelation of his character’s death “gutted” him.

Let me just phrase it like this. When I went in to read The Last Jedi, [I spent] the first 30 pages thinking, ‘This is the most incredible character.’ Then I turned the page: ‘And then Snoke gets sliced in half.’ And I was gutted. Gutted.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Snoke had been created by Emperor Palpatine, who had secretly been guiding Snoke’s actions all along. Fans had obviously hoped that Snoke would have been explored a little more in the sequels, but Andy Serkis is game to reprise the role in some other Star Wars project. “I actually really love that character,” Serkis said. “And I’m putting it out there: I wouldn’t mind if he came back.” As The Mandalorian has potentially made a few nods to Snoke, it’s entirely possible.

Andy Serkis did return to the Star Wars franchise in a different role when he played Kino Loy in the first season of Andor. Getting to show his stuff free from any digital makeup was a plus, and Serkis said that Andorwas a masterpiece of TV-making. love that grounded Star Wars world – not that I don’t like the more operatic [style], because I do like that too. But it’s nice to see it explore the murky end of the swimming pool.

Andy Serkis will next be seen starring alongside Idris Elba in Luther: The Fallen Sun. Serkis plays a gruesome serial killer who is terrorizing London while the brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary. Luther: The Fallen Sun will launch on Netflix on March 10th and you can check out a review of the film from our own JimmyO right here.
