Amber Heard, Aquaman 2

Update: A spokesperson for Amber Heard denied that the actress has been cut from Aquaman 2 in a statement to Variety. “The rumor mill continues as it has from day one — inaccurate, insensitive and slightly insane.

Even if you did everything you could to avoid it, Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard was the talk of the town for many weeks. Depp had sued Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post. Although she didn’t mention Depp by name, the actor claimed that the fallout from the article caused extensive financial losses and alleged that Heard had been the abuser. Depp wound up winning the defamation case, and the backlash against Amber Heard reached new heights. It’s probably best to take this news with a grain of salt, but it’s been rumoured (yet again) that the studio has cut Amber Heard from Aquaman 2 and is planning on recasting the role of Mera.

The report from JustJared was later updated to say that a new source reached out to say that “Amber has not been completely cut from the film. She still has a small role.” Other sources continued to tell JustJared that Amber Heard would be recast. During the defamation trial, Amber Heard confirmed that her role in Aquaman 2 is much smaller than in the previous movie. She said that she had to fight “really hard to stay in the movie,” as Warner Bros. “didn’t want to include me in the film.”

I was given a script. Then given new versions of the script that had taken away scenes that had action in it, that depicted my character and another character, without giving spoilers away, two characters fighting with one another. They basically took a bunch out of my role. They just removed a bunch.

Amber Heard confirmed that her role in Aquaman 2 is a “very pared-down version” of what she originally signed on for. The Aquaman sequel, titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and more. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will premiere on March 17, 2023.
