Illumination has set the official The Super Mario Bros. Movie digital release date, with the massively popular film set to arrive to home audiences later this week.

When does The Super Mario Bros. Movie release digitally?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie digital release date will be May 16, 2023. The film will be available on a litany of digital platforms, where it will be available to buy or rent.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) from a screenplay written by Minions: The Rise of Gru scribe Matthew Fogel. Chris Meledandri for Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo are producers are on the project.

The film features the voices of its all-star cast including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The film quickly became a massive success for Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures. So far, the film has grossed $748.7 million worldwide at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and also making it the highest-grossing film based on a video game ever.

The feature also set box office records for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film ever. Currently, it’s expected to surpass $1 billion at the box office when all is said and done.

Recently, the creator of the Super Mario franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto, teased that Nintendo’s next film adaptation could feature other iconic characters from its large roster of video game classics.
