Robert Eggers’ The Northman is racking up more than bodies after debuting on VOD services; it’s also amassing plenty of money. In general, The Northman is performing about as well as The Bad Guys or The Lost City, regardless of those two films having much higher box office totals.
According to the latest totals posted by iTunes, The Northman is running right alongside Bad Guys and The Lost City in terms of viewership and sales. These totals are impressive, given that Northman had a much lower box office performance and aims to please a more specific audience. In Eggers’ latest epic, no adorable animals are committing a crime, nor does the Viking revenge tale star the swoon-worthy Channing Tatum or witty and wonderful Sandra Bullock. Universal has quickly gotten its films released on VOD services, usually after three weeks. This trend has allowed the studio to recoup expenses and keep word of mouth going about the quality of their library.
Anyone I’ve spoken to about The Northman has had glowing things to say about the film, and that positive feedback has translated to solid numbers on the streaming front. Focus Features will assuredly make their money back for the film and then some if the pattern holds. The fact of the matter is that although mask mandates have been lifted in many parts of the world, audiences are still hesitant about getting back into theaters. Close quarters seating is something of a bother for most, even if they’re fully vaccinated and wear a mask between snacking. Hopefully, as Covid cases continue to even out, more people will be willing to sit in a theater for something that isn’t a superhero epic or the latest blockbuster release.
