Deiji Meets Girl premiered in October 2021 in Japan, and consisted of 12 episodes, each of which lasted approximately 90 seconds, creating one short film in essence. Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko was originally released in Japan in June 2021 and is produced by Studio 4°C, who are best known for their work on the 2019 film Children of the Sea. The film also marks the next entry in the career of director Ayumu Watanabe, who was also behind Children of the Sea, as well as 2014’s Space Brothers #0.

“Maise is stuck spending the summer after her first year of high school helping out at her family’s hotel in the sleepy seaside town, but things become a little less sleepy once Ichiro, a mysterious young man, checks into the hotel,” says the official synopsis of Deiji Meets Girl. “It seems as if only Maise and Ichiro can see the strange, sudden apparitions: the hotel lobby and the room transforming into an aquarium, a giant tree erupting from the floor or the rowdy monsters laying claim to the hotel restaurant. Maise vows to figure out not just what’s causing these odd occurrences but why Ichiro has come to this remote town in the first place.”
