GKIDS announced that it would be bringing Studio 4°C’s animated feature film Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko to theaters later this year.

The film will hit theaters beginning on June 2, 2022, with GKIDS continuing its ongoing partnership with Fathom Events in the process. In addition to the full feature film, audiences will also get to see an introduction to the film by critically acclaimed director Ayumu Watanabe and Creative Producer Sanma Akashiya, which will be exclusive to the Fathom Events screenings.



Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko was originally released in Japan in June 2021 and is produced by Studio 4°C, who are best known for their work on the 2019 film Children of the Sea. Likewise, the film also marks the next entry in the career of director Ayumu Watanabe, who was also behind Children of the Sea, as well as 2014’s Space Brothers #0.

“Brash single mother Nikuko is well-known for her bold spirit, much to the embarrassment of Kikuko, her pensive yet imaginative daughter,” reads the official synopsis. “In contrast to her mother, Kikuko wants nothing more than to fit in as she navigates the everyday social dramas of middle school. Life in the harbor is peaceful until a shocking revelation from the past threatens to uproot the pair’s tender relationship.”
