After Parasite took home awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, Bong Joon-ho is ready to unleash his follow-up to the acclaimed movie. Warner Bros. Pictures announced the release date for Mickey 17, a sci-fi movie starring Robert Pattinson (The Batman) based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton.
Mickey 17 is currently in production and will be released worldwide in theaters on March 29, 2024. That’s a bit of a wait, but the release of the next Bong Joon-ho movie will undoubtably be worth it. A short teaser was also released, showing Robert Pattinson in some type of sci-fi apperatus.
Plot details about Mickey 17 are being kept under wraps, but the novel follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey,” reads a description. “After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.”
In addition to Robert Pattinson, Mickey 17 also stars Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame). The movie is being directed, written, and produced by Bong Joon-ho. Pattinson recently starred in Matt Reeves’ The Batman and is expected to reprise the role for the upcoming sequel. The Batman 2 is still in the early stages, but with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the DC Universe and mapping out a multi-year plan, it’s not clear if anything will change regarding the sequel.
