Quentin Tarantino ranks Crystal Skull above The Last Crusade

Quentin Tarantino may not work for JoBlo, but he has recently opened up about something that would fit right in with our Unpopular Opinion articles. On August 3rd, Quentin, with his friend and past collaborator, Roger Avary, made an appearance on the ReelBlend podcast where, in a conversation about the Indiana Jones movie series, he reveals he actually prefers the much-maligned fourth movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, to the third one, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Predictably, his fans were up in arms about this revelation.

Tarantino explains,

I like Crystal Skull more than the Sean Connery one. I don’t like the Sean Connery one. I don’t like (that) one at all. That’s such a boring one. It’s boring! And he’s not an interesting character. The joke is made immediately. It’s like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.”

When Avary weighed in, he didn’t quite share the exact sentiment as Quentin, but he does come out in favor of the fourth movie, saying that he liked it. Their opinions were in response to the co-host, Kevin McCarthy when addressing how he doesn’t view Crystal Skull as a true sequel in the franchise.

Recently, it’s been announced that the directors are starting a new podcast called The Video Archives, in which they talk about movies, no matter how obscure. Cinema Blend reports that the esteemed directors appeared on the podcast to promote their new show. The conversation naturally became about their favorite movies. Of course, when talking about cinematic giants, names like Spielberg will get brought up, which is when Quentin dropped his bomb on everyone.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is undeniably seen as the black sheep of the movie franchise, whether or not you are pro or con, as its story veers toward more interstellar phenomena than religious relics. Quentin, often being seen as prestigious with his meticulously crafted movies as well as being like an idiot savant about films, is always asked about his opinions about different types of movies. I would side more with Roger Avary on this topic, but Tarantino definitely has a peculiar eye for cinema.

A fifth Indiana Jones sequel, yet to be named, directed by James Mangold, is set to be released next year.
