NEON has released the first trailer for Ava DuVernay’s Origin, a new movie starring Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, and more.

Origin is written, produced, and directed by DuVernay, who previously made 2014’s Selma, 2016’s 13th, and 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time, among other titles. Based on a 2020 nonfiction novel titled Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, the film is also produced by Paul Garnes.

What is Ava DuVernay’s Origin about?

“While grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, Isabel sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery,” NEON said of the film. “Despite the colossal scope of her project, she finds beauty and bravery while crafting one of the defining American books of our time.”

In addition to Farmiga and Bernthal, Origin also stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Niecy Nash-Betts, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, Finn Wittrock, Jasmine Cephas-Jones, and Connie Nielsen.

Matthew J. Lloyd serves as the cinematographer, Spencer Averick as the editor, Kris Bowers as the composer, Dominique Dawson as the costume designer, and Aisha Coley as the casting director.

“I’ve known Ava for a long time and my love and admiration for her and her work goes back further, even before Middle of Nowhere. I’m truly humbled that it is this movie which has finally brought us together,” NEON CEO Tom Quinn said. “She has always been a gifted storyteller, and her mastery of her craft shines through in this deeply personal and inspired adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s book, and dramatization of her remarkable life. Origin proves once again that Ava remains one of the most groundbreaking and essential filmmakers of her generation.”

Origin is celebrating its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2023. It will also be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival before it releases theatrically in the United States later this year.
