As production continues on Joker: Folie à Deux, award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has officially confirmed her return as the composer for the forthcoming sequel.
Speaking with Variety, the Icelandic composer revealed that she has begun composing the music for the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led DC film, which will reportedly feature some musical elements to the story. Guðnadóttir also feels that she is hitting her peak as an artist at 40.
“I have a better understanding of what I need to function as a person – what helps me maintain my body, my mind, and my creative process,” the composer said. “I feel I’m just starting to learn that now. I’m not very strategic about how I choose new projects. It’s normally quite obvious very fast whether a project will resonate with me or not.”
This marks the third collaboration between the acclaimed composer and Phoenix, after first working together in the biblical drama Mary Magdalene. For her work in the 2019 film, the Joker 2 composer won multiple awards including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy for Best Original Score.
Joker: Folie à Deux will once again be directed by Todd Phillips. The film will feature the return of Joaquin Phoenix as he reprises his Oscar-winning role as the titular DC villain. He will be joined by Grammy-winning superstar Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
The 2019 film was both a critical and commercial success, with a worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. It received recognition from multiple major award-giving bodies, including two Oscars and two Golden Globes, both for Best Actor and Best Original Sound.
