Filming on Season 2 of House of the Dragon is underway. However, plans for House of the Dragon Season 3 are currently in development, with a potential fourth season on the way.
When will House of the Dragon season 3 arrive?
While speaking with Deadline, HBO’s head of drama, Francesca Orsi, responded to an earlier report that House of the Dragon Season 3 had already been mapped out. Orsi said the show is focused on Season 2, but the network wants to start Season 3 “more quickly” once the second season ends.
“We are mindful of rolling into Season 3 more quickly after Season 2, but that hasn’t been officially sorted out because right now we’re just trying to get Season 2 off the ground,” Orsi said.
Deadline previously reported that Season 2 will consist of eight episodes, down from the 10-episode first season. A major battle intended for Season 2 has already been pushed to Season 3. With the story being stretched out, there have been talks of a potential fourth season. Co-creators Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin have been discussing if the series should end after Season 3 or Season 4. Orsi believes Season 4 is very likely.
“It hasn’t been finalized yet, it’s still under discussion,” Orsi said. “George and Ryan are going to meet after the writers strike. They had originally planned to meet before the strike took place and that was to figure out at what point the series itself was going to end. Is it four seasons? I don’t think from where I sit at this point will be any less than four. But could be more. We’ll see.”
Based on Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon depicts the rise and fall of House Targaryen and the devasting civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons.” The series takes place 200 years before the start of Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon Season 1 premiered on August 21, 2022. The ensemble cast featured Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Steve Toussaint, Sonoya Mizuno, Ewan Mitchell, Fabien Frankel, and Tom Glynn-Carney.
