Chainsaw Man Episode 1 Recap

A boy named Denji works as a devil hunter to pay off his dead father’s debt to the yakuza. He works with Pochita, his Devil dog that resembles a chainsaw. Denji is barely making it day by day and even sold some of his body parts to decrease the debt. While sharing a piece of sliced bread, Denji talks to Pochita about his dreams. There’s also a flashback of when Denji and Pochita first met. He encountered Pochita when he was younger and noticed that Pochita was injured. He then offered his blood, and they made a deal where they would help each other out.

The yakuza lures Denji out for another job. They go to an abandoned warehouse where they attack Denji. The boss reveals that their group made a deal with the Zombie Devil in exchange for powers. The Zombie Devil wants devil hunters dead, so it ordered the group to kill him. After Denji gets chopped into pieces and thrown in the trash, some of his blood gets into Pochita’s mouth. Pochita saves Denji since they discussed Pochita will take over Denji’s body when he dies.

Denji sees a vision of Pochita telling him to live out his dreams. Pochita becomes Denji’s heart, and Denji now has a pull string on his chest. After pulling the string, Denji transforms into a human and chainsaw hybrid. He then kills the Zombie Devils and the yakuza. The following day, a group of Public Safety Devil Hunters appears at the scene. Makima, the group’s leader, offers to take care of Denji and feed him. He happily takes the offer.
