Bullet Train pulls into a strong $30.1 million opening weekend

The last big movie of the summer pulled into the station with strong results. Bullet Train easily topped the box office weekend and pretty much debuted within expectations.

Bullet Train grossed $30.1 million over the weekend, which was in line with most box office tracking but below my $35 million prediction for the film. The movie earned a “B+” CinemaScore, which is decent for a film in this genre, but it could indicate that word of mouth isn’t completely strong for the off-beat action film. All signs point to the movie grossing at least $100 million domestically by the end of its run because of the lack of competition, and it should also be a solid international player due to Pitt and its diverse ensemble cast. Globally, the film opened to an impressive $62.5 million.

Dropping to second place is DC League of Super-Pets, with a gross of $11.2 million. That’s a drop of 51%, which is pretty steep for an animated film. I thought the movie would see a hefty decline due to its soft opening last weekend but this drop is even bigger than anticipated. The good news is that the film will likely level off in the weeks ahead and still pull in decent numbers for Warner Bros. because there isn’t any competition in its way until November. To date, DC League of Super-Pets has grossed $45.1 million domestically.

In third place, we have Nope, with a gross of $8.5 million. That’s a drop of 54%, which is another hefty drop but expected due to it being a horror film and a movie that has divided Jordan Peele’s fanbase in terms of its quality. That being said, it’s still a genre film that is set to gross over $100 million, so that’s a win in the world of horror. To date, Nope has grossed $97.9 million at the domestic box office.

Thor: Love and Thunder sits in fourth place this weekend with a gross of $7.6 million. That’s a 42% decline from last weekend, and even though this MCU release has divided some fans, it has still managed to gross $316 million domestically, representing another win for Marvel. Also, after grossing another $11.1 million internationally, the film brings its global haul to $699 million.

Rounding out the top five is Minions: The Rise of Gru, with a gross of $7.1 million. That’s a decline of 35% as the film continues to be the top choice for kids and families. The film has grossed a mighty $334.5 million at the domestic box office and still has some gas in the tank to at least gross $350 million by the end of its run.

What are YOUR thoughts on this weekend’s box office results?
