As predicted, The Bad Guys maintained the top spot this weekend but it was a quiet time at the box office as we await the arrival of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The Bad Guys grossed $16.1 million over the weekend which represented a not-so-bad drop of 33% from the previous frame. Heading into Sunday, it looked like a $14 million weekend but Sunday estimates are said to be better than expected for a healthier finish. To date, The Bad Guys has grossed $44.4 million as it becomes a sleeper family hit at the box office.
Maintaining second place is Sonic The Hedgehog 2 which grossed $11.3 million. That’s a decline of 28% and it proves that different styles of family films can thrive at the box office, even with direct competition. Ahead of the weekend, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 became the highest-grossing video game adaptation at the domestic box office and it still has some gas left in the tank. The Sonic sequel has grossed $160.9 million to date at the domestic box office.
In third place, we find Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore which had a better hold in weekend three with a decline of 41% to gross $8.3 million. Even though the hold was better this weekend, The Secrets of Dumbledore continues to be a disappointment at the domestic box office. The film has grossed $79.5 million to date and that’s a far cry from its reported $200 million budget.
The Northman maintains fourth place with a gross of $6.3 million, down 49% from the previous weekend. The good news is that the drop was slightly above 50% this weekend but the problem is that opening from last weekend was so soft that it’s hard to rebound from that. To date, The Northman has grossed $22.8 million at the domestic box office.
Rounding out the top five, as I predicted, is Everything Everywhere All at Once, which grossed $5.5 million this weekend. That’s actually an increase of 2% from the previous weekend as the A24 platform release continues to prove successful. Word of mouth has been gradual and it’s continuing to thrive. I suspect the movie will continue to entice moviegoers and become a true runaway hit for the studio. To date, the multiverse sensation has grossed $35.4 million at the domestic box office.
What are YOUR thoughts on this weekend’s box office results?
